SERPENTINE: is a major rock forming mineral and is the general name applied to a large group of 20 various mineral combinations composed primarily of these minerals called "serpentinite". The name derives from the Latin word "serpeninus", meaning "serpent rock" which describes the often mottled and scaly appearance. Most Serpentines are opaque to translucent with a Moh’s Scale hardness of 2.5 to 4. All are microcrystallines, with a vitreous, greasy or silky luster. Serpentine Colors can range from white to gray, yellow to green, brown to black, and are often splotchy or veined. Many serpentinite rocks have metamorphosed with other minerals, such as calcite and dolomite, and its occurrence is worldwide.
