Among the indigenous people of the American plains, shields were not only used as protection in battle, but were also hung either outside or inside of lodges to personally identify the warrior or family clan that lived within. Since a warrior’s shield was believed to embody powerful medicine, it was often covered from view when not in use.
The Shield is constructed of heavy Rawhide and hand painted with natural pigment dies. Measuring a generous 20” in diameter, it is embellished with vintage glass trade beads that hang from deer suede ties. In the center hangs a hand-painted simulated hawk feather with beaded quill. A large 3-1/2” by 24” fully-beaded leather strap completes the shield.
The beaded Shield Cover is fashioned from deer suede, and embellished with beaver fur, beaded panel red wool flags, abalone shell discs, vintage glass trade beads, genuine bone hairpipe, brass cones, horse hair drops and hand-painted simulated hawk feathers with beaded quills.
The Tripod stands approximately 5 ft. high, and is hand-carved from traditional cottonwood branches and painted with natural pigment dies.
