Pow Wow Country
By: Chris Roberts
Chris Roberts, a musicians' agent from Missoula, Montana, has been dancing competitively on the powwow circuit for twenty-five years. He also has been recording both pictures and the words of other powwow participants. Join him and his friends in the "celebration on Indian-ness" that welcomes people of all ages and ethnic groups. It's time for feasting, visiting old friends and meeting new ones, parades, honoring ceremonies, singing, dancing all night, competing under the dance arbor and having an all-around good time. Watch the acrobatics of male fancy dancers and the subtle grace of women traditional dancers, hear the singers and the drum trying to trick dancers into missing the beat, take a chance gambling at the stick game, and be sure to enjoy plenty of fry bread and Indian tacos. But, especially, meet the people for whom powwow is a way of life and emblem of a proud culture.
