CHALCEDONY: (often referred to as "Jade") is a variety of Quartz that is formed, not of one single crystal, but of finely grained micro crystals is known as microcrystalline. The variety of Chalcedony Quartz available is even greater than that of macrocrystalline Quartz because it includes cryptocrystalline with patterns as well as a wide range of solid colors. Chalcedony has a waxy luster, and may be semitransparent or translucent. It measures a hardness of 7 on the Moh's scale. The term "Chalcedony" is derived from the name of the ancient Greek town Chalkedon in Asia Minor, in modern English usually spelled Chalcedon, today the Kadikoy district of Istanbul. Blue is not a natural occurring color among Quartz varieties.
The Blue Quartz sold on the jewelry market is either the result of color enhancement or a manmade or "lab-grown" variety that has the same chemical, physical, and optical characteristics as their natural counterparts. Much like a Cubic Zirconia is to a Diamond.
