BLACK AGATE: is just one of a many varieties of Chalcedony Quartz. The names for Chalcedony and Agate are somewhat interchangeable, although the term "Agate" is usually used to describe the banded varieties of Chalcedony. This gemstone is specifically generated in eruptive rocks or in primeval lava zones and are found in the form of rounded nodules or geodes. When split or sliced, these show their banding to good, sometimes startling effect. In some geodes there is a central cavity, in other the center is hollow. The Native Americans of the western American states referred to these agate nodules as "thunder eggs". Agate is the oldest stone in recorded history. Agates have been used in jewelry since Biblical Babylonian times and were prized gems in antiquity.

While all agates are said to be "protective stones",  Black Agate in particular is believed by some to relieve stress, give protection and increase courage.
