Buffalo Hearts is an account of Native American culture, religion and history from the standpoint of a traditional and very literate Native American who writes with fervor and insight about his people. Such books are badly needed to counter the centuries of propaganda from white-oriented books, newspapers, radio and television programs that have so often pictured Native Americans as savages. In his writing Sun Bear does not lump all non-Natives in the category of enemies. He realizes the vital need to bring all races together into harmony and understanding. His stories of some great Native Americans and their deeds of heroism and sacrifice bring to all readers a feeling of sympathy and closeness to truly fine human beings. We also begin to see clearly the Native cultures and religions and their importance to today's world, as well as yesterday's.
