Loyalty, Power, Glory, Endurance, Stamina & Speed

PEGASUS, according to Greek Mythology, was a winged white stallion sired by the God of the Sea, Poseidon. He was said to be the most beautiful creature the ancient world had ever seen. The hero Bellerophan, gifted with a golden bridal from the Goddess Athena , captured Pegasus one day as he drank peacefully by a stream. It was said that everywhere the horse struck his hoof to the ground, an inspiring spring burst forth from the earth.

Pegasus went on to become Bellerophan’s most beloved fiend, and while riding the great stallion the hero knew no bounds. Together they conquered Chimera, the dreaded three-headed beast who was part lion, goat and serpent. Thanks to Pegasus’ magical powers, Bellerophan soon became arrogant with his success and attempted to ride the steed up to Mount Olympus in order to join the ranks of the Gods. Zeus, the king of the Gods, decided to punish Bellerophan by stinging him with a horsefly which caused him fall from the horse’s back and crash back down to earth.

Alone, Pegasus continued on to Mount Olympus where he was welcomed and became the carrier of Zeus’ thunderbolts. In honor of the mighty stallion, the King of Gods set the constellation of the winged horse in the night sky for all to remember.

Pegasus is said to signify power, glory, endurance, as well as extraordinary stamina and speed whereby one may mount to honor. The image of Pegasus is often used as an emblem of fame. This beautiful winged stallion of mythology has become a widely used symbol in heraldry and is frequently seen on many royal crests.
